Architecture for Humanity | noisedetroit
noisedetroit is the local metro-Detroit Chapter for Architecture for Humanity.
Mission statement to date:
noisedetroit is the collaborative effort of area professionals who share a vision and hope for the metro-Detroit area in terms of its built environment. While following the guidelines of Architecture for Humanity, we will strive to bring together the voices of people from all branches of learning in order to create a little noise to inspire growth and change in the metro-Detroit area…..
Why bring AFH to Detroit:
The one simple and short answer is “To make a difference!” It is no secret that Detroit is an area with a lot of problems, both big and small. With the current state of the economy, the area has been hit especially hard, and the mood/spirit/etc. has been affected as a result. Buildings and lots that once housed many companies/businesses/residents are now vacant; and the average home price in Detroit is floating around $12,000 [according to the Michigan Association of Realtors and Detroit Board of Realtors], which is the lowest in the country.
Metro Detroiters young and old, poor and rich, and of various races all have their opinions on what it will take to turn Detroit around. The goal of this AFH chapter would be to provide an outlet for all of these voices and channel them to make a difference; while making a little noise where it is needed.
It is our belief that through architecture we can make a difference. Since there is currently no active chapter of AFH, we think that the need is apparent now more than ever and thus have decided to reignite AFH's presence in the metro Detroit area with noisedetroit.
What we feel our impact will be:
While we don’t expect to solve every problem currently plaguing Detroit with the creation of this chapter, we do hope to spark interest and create a ripple effect. By getting people from all branches of learning involved in several small scale projects [at least initially], we hope to restore the mood and attitude that change is possible on any level.
We see this chapter, noisedetroit, as the collaborative effort of area professionals who share a vision and hope for the metro-Detroit area in terms of its built environment. While following the guidelines of Architecture for Humanity, we will strive to bring together the voices of people from all branches of learning in order to create a little noise to inspire growth and change in the metro-Detroit area.
